A Farewell to Fall
Savoring autumn’s colors as winter slowly approaches

As I look out my window, a few trees in the yard still hold their lovely autumn colors, though a chill in the air signals the slow transition toward winter. I thought this would be a good time to say goodbye to a beautiful fall, which I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy since the end of September, when I was briefly in Colorado.
Fall is my favorite time of year — not just because I love the beautiful colors, but also because I love the crisp, cool air when I’m out hiking in the woods. Although the days are getting shorter, there is still ample daylight to get outside and enjoy being in nature. Most days, I go out without photographing, but rather just to hike and be surrounded by the trees.
This season’s display seems to have lasted longer than others I recall. The colors came on gradually in some places and with specific kinds of trees, then slowly transitioned across the landscape. I love how, after each tree has had its turn with its vibrant display, the fallen leaves return to the earth to nourish the next season’s growth and create forest trails that remind me of the yellow brick road in The Wizard of Oz.
I don’t have any deep reflections to share today — just a few images to celebrate the gentle shift from autumn to winter.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me. I’m truly grateful you’re here and for any feedback you’d like to share in the comments.

These are so lovely Todd - you have such an amazing landscape around you and the stands of Aspen are just incredible with their golden colour. I do love your more detailed images especially the yellow leaves against the peeling wood and the red on the red door. We've been blessed across the northern hemisphere with one of the best autumnal displays for years and you've brought the full spirit of that with these images - beautiful work!
